MIRRA – HTU trainees’ visit to Wastewater treatment plants

Jordan is a water-scarce country and agriculture consumes more than 50% of the available water resources. Thus, the use of non-conventional water resources for agriculture is essential to reduce the demand for freshwater resources. The HTU trainees got theoretical training on wastewater treatment. For better learning of the process and technologies of treatment, trainees visited a centralized wastewater treatment plant (Al Fuhais and Mahes). The capacity of the plant is 3000 m3/ day. The water is treated using a preliminary and secondary treatment. The treated wastewater is reused for agricultural purposes.

Moreover, the trainees visited the Sustainable Management of Available Water Resources with Innovative Technologies (SMART) project. SMART project “a research project sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). It has the goal of developing a transferable approach for Integrated Water Resources Management in the water shortage region of the Lower Jordan Valley”. The trainees demonstrated different decentralized wastewater treatment technologies (Modified Septic Tank, Sequence Batch Reactor, and constructed wetlands).

This training is part of the collaboration project between the Hussein Technical University and Sahara project. The goal of this training to enhance the capacities of female unemployed female engineers on the innovation and food production inside the Water- Energy- Food Nexus in Jordan. Where MIRRA is the technical trainer in this program.
